Rowing is the nation's oldest intercollegiate sport--the first race between Harvard & Yale Universities took place in 1852
Rowing is one of the original events of the modern Olympics
An 8-man racing shell is ~55 feet long and ~24 inches wide
As they produce energy, rowers consume almost twice as much oxygen as ordinary people
An 8-man crew boat can drag a 180lb water skier from a dead stop from its stern at nearly 12mph
It was proven on Mythbusters

An Overview of GMU Crew
Practices GMU Crew practices at the Sandy Run Boathouse, a quick 10-minute drive from campus. In the fall, we practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 2-4 PM, and on Saturday mornings. Please make every effort to adjust your class schedule around practices. It is critical to attend every practice. We row on the water as often as possible, but in the cold of late November, we hold practice on indoor rowing machines at the GMU Field House. In the spring, we row weekdays from 2-4 PM and Saturday mornings. Rowers should wear tight-fitting shorts and shirts, hats and sweatbands. Baggy clothing will be uncomfortable and will limit your ability to row well. All new rowers will be grouped together, everyone will learn together. Rowers that exhibit top effort and potential may move up the Varsity boats.

Racing GMU Crew competes in 4 fall races and 7 spring races, culminating in the Dad Vail championship, one of the largest collegiate regattas in the country. We compete against some of the top schools in the Mid-Atlantic Region, such as Delaware, Drexel, George Washington, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech. Races are held on Saturdays or Sundays, and most are on the Occoquan, although occasionally we may travel to Philadelphia or Camden, New Jersey.

Remember, all rowers who attend practice regularly and work hard will race. There are no cuts and no experience is necessary to join.

At the Dad Vail, GMU's best finishes were silver in 1994 and 1996. Following Dad Vails, select rowers may compete in the IRA Regatta, the collegiate national championship. GMU's best finishes there were 5th overall, in both 2000 and 2002.
